After a hot, sunny day, and despite the conflicting attraction of Andy Murray’s Wimbledon semi-final, a good many Waverley Harriers competed in the Elstead Marathon on Friday evening. This is an annual event organised by the Elstead scouts on the first Friday in July and has a lovely village fayre atmosphere on the green. The course is actually about 5.2 miles long, running through the streets of the village where there is great support from the residents, across the sandy common tracks to the south of Elstead and with the highlight coming close to the finish where you have to cross the River Wey by the Mill while watched by noisy children on the bridge hoping for someone to trip. I counted 13 Waverley Harriers competing, with some notable performances including the 3rd and 4th placed ladies.
