On the Spot – Ruth Lyon

We started a feature recently to hear from the Waverley Harriers and see what motivates them and we want to do this by asking the same questions. We kicked this off with Chairman, Steve Rogers. He nominated Ruth Lyon to be the latest Waverley Harrier to be put on the spot and tell us exactly about her motivation.

1. When did running begin for you?

Ruth: After I had my second child. It dawned on me that exercise was going to be a struggle to fit in, so, as much as it was going to be horrible I would have to run!

2. Why do you run?
Ruth: Normal reasons – to keep fit and eat and drink as much as I like. Running is also a great way to see the countryside and relax.

3.What race or moment in your running career holds the most significance and why?
Ruth: I think finishing my first marathon. I never thought I would be able to do that. When I started I could only run for 15 minutes. I remember asking a friend to run with me to tell me if she thought I could manage the Hogs Back race. To be able to train and run a marathon felt fantastic, it took me ages to stop talking about it!

4. Who is your running inspiration?

Ruth: I am not really a ‘teccy’ runner so don’t read running magazines or research online. I just make myself do it.

5. What event, past or present, would you like to take part in and why?

Ruth: I would quite like to do a longer run (if my knees could cope). A nice countryside sedate long distance would be lovely.

6. what golden piece of advice would you give to other runners?

Ruth: The first 3-4 miles is always the worst even if you are doing 20. Don’t just stick to that distance because you think you can’t go further – the rest will be easier, promise!

7. What’s next?

Ruth: I am going to enjoy the cross country season, do a few races such as the Hogs Back and enjoy myself.

Thanks to Ruth for doing this, and lookout for the next instalment. Ruth now gets to nominate the next Waverley Harrier to be put on the spot.
